Pintor francés. Fue aclamado por primera vez en 1728, cuando se hizo miembro de la Academia Real de Pintura de París. Fue un exitoso pintor de naturalezas muertas y de escenas domésticas que destacan por su realismo íntimo, atmósfera tranquila y luminosidad. En sus últimos años realizó magníficos retratos en pastel. Fue el mejor pintor de naturalezas muertas del s. XVIII, y fue muy conocido en su época gracias a sus grabados. La quietud meditativa de su obra contrasta con el exceso de brillos y superficialidad de las pinturas de muchos de sus contemporáneos. Varios artistas del s. XX se inspiraron en las cualidades abstractas de sus composiciones.
